I also believe that home equity lines given to people, while not poor, but had bad credit (debt to income ration) also fall in the "suprime" category. Many of these people have too lost their essentially newly purchased houses when the values dropped below what their mortgage was worth coupled with the additional line of credit they received based off the false appraisals performed by the crooked appraisal industry. I believe these type of loans coupled with those people who were getting loans for bigger houses (trading up)- - where essentially their debt to income ratio's (if your household income is 150k and you've got more then 50% of your earnings going towards credit cards and Hummer/Escalade payments) were out of whack, yet the crooked loan processors fudged the numbers in order for the loan to go through- were more of the problem then poor blacks getting home loans as far as the sub-prime mess goes.
