Identity!

michelle-obama-white-house-portrait

Wednesday, The New York Times published a fascinating article dealing with Michelle Obama’s family history from slavery to First Lady of the United States.  I highly recommend that you read it, click here for the story.  Two of the interesting features of the article is a paper trail that shows original documents of Michelle’s ancestors being willed to successive generations.  Some of the documents have a yellow box that allows you to get detailed information of what each page says.  The other feature is an interactive family tree with some narration included, click here for that page. I bring this to your attention not only because it is a good read but to ask the question, what exactly do we know about ourselves and our family histories?

One of the most horrific practices of the slave trade was the practice of separating the slaves in the indoctrination period, this was done to specifically destroy any tribal or familial bonds that the slaves may have had.  That had the disastrous effect of ensuring that slaves with different dialects could not communicate with each other and had no genuine affinity for those in the same plight other than they were all black.  This same behavior was employed once the slaves were introduced to life on the plantations.  Family units were constantly being destroyed by the selling of one’s children and often their mates.  I am not a social scientist but I have long suspected that the dysfunction of some black families have become predisposed to troublesome familial relationships.  But that is not the track I want to take here.

What I would like to ask is how many of you, black or white can trace your family past two or three generations?  I am fortunate that on my maternal grandmother’s side I can go back three to four generations.  In fact, she put together a report before she had her stroke that I hope to make available to my family on DVD very soon.  That has all of the elements of black, white, and Indian blood.  I’ve read that the Indian blood is highly exaggerated in most cases.  However, my great maternal grandmother was indeed half Cherokee.  She had the scalps to prove it. LOL

I want to know more about the paternal side of my family.  They were practically wiped out during the tuberculosis epidemic in Washington, D.C. during the 1940’s.  Only four of seven children survived and my paternal grandmother was not one of them yet she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.  If only by photograph.  Human curiosity is a wonderful thing and I will continue to explore it until my dying breath.

I am not famous, nor do I suspect that The New York Times will champion my cause like they did Mrs. Obama’s.  But I would like to take that National Geographic DNA test to determine exactly where from Africa my roots lie.  But I’d also like to know where I got the name Hardy.  If he’s rich, I want my fucking inheritance.

Presidential Prescription!

joewilson

I have to admit that I’ve been a little less enamored of President Barack Obama lately.  Up until last night he has let the opposition party shape the narrative on health care reform.  And if you let the opposition take the lead, you’re not going to hear any moderate voices because there are really no moderates left in the Republican Party.  If there are, I’ve certainly not heard from them.  For example, in yesterday’s edition of the Wall Street Journal, that wacky former governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin published this OP-ED piece reinforcing the lie that is known as death panels.  Why would a newspaper with such prestige even give Sarah Palin a forum to publish outlandish lies?  Keep in mind that the WSJ was purchased by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. (Fox News) and it’s editorial page has shifted from conservative to wingnut.  Anybody that has listened to Palin speak knows that she is not capable of producing this kind of work.  There is not one “you betcha” or “gosh darn” anywhere in the piece.

Barack Obama delivered a masterful speech last night.  He was presidential, strong, persuasive, and debunked the myths and lies being propagated by the wingnuts on the Republican fringe like Sarah Palin.  This was Barack Obama in campaign mode.  This is the Barack Obama that I voted for.  This is the Barack Obama who should realize that the American people voted for change and that he won with a large majority giving him a mandate.  George W. Bush was appointed by the Supreme Court and he came into office and rammed his legislative agenda down the Democrat’s throats.  Obama must do the same thing.  He can reach out to Republicans all he wants.  But he must realize by now that he cannot count on the party of NO!  There is no bipartisanship in a democracy.  In this country it is “majority rule.”

Let me give you two arguments to support my position.  Last night South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson (R) yelled out “You lie!” when the President said the legislation would not mandate coverage for undocumented immigrants.

This half heartedly apology was issues by Wilson about an hour after the speech concluded:

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”

I do not buy it one bit.  This only reason that he apologized was because the Republican leadership told him to do so as evidenced by his appearances and remarks on today’s news programs.  Congressman Wilson is not the only Republican to feel this way, they just happen to be a little more disciplined.  But he is from South Carolina, so what do you expect?  The Republican leadership, although they talk out of both sides of their faces, is content to let the ignorant spew out their talking points on cable news.  The use words like Socialist, Facist, indoctrination, and cult of personality and now want a seat at the table.  If you can’t have a civil discourse then you dont deserve a seat at that table.  Sorry about that!  The train has left the station!  At the very least, Congressman Wilson should be censured by the House of Representatives.

My second argument against taking the Republicans seriously is their blatant hypocrisy concerning health care.  While they are running around complaining about government intervention, let us remember the case of Terry Schivao. They did everything in their power to prevent her husband from carrying out his legal rights.  Hands off my health care?  Not so fast my friend!  The Republicans will insert themselves into and interfere with your lives any time Rush Limbaugh and the other talking dittoheads tell them to. Particularly, when it comes to your sex lives and women’s reproductive freedom.  They are a corporation as opposed to the Democrats who are a fragile coalition.  A corporation is charged with only one thing and that is to make a profit for their shareholders.  In doing so, lies and deceit mean nothing to them as long as they achieve the bottom line.

President Obama needs to scrap any hope of getting help from the Republicans with the exception of the two Senators from Maine (both are women) and concentrate on bringing the Blue Dog Democrats into the fold.  In other words, he needs to tell the Republicans to take two aspirin and call him in the morning.
