It’s bad enough that any moron in this country can obtain a gun if he/she tries hard enough. What’s even worse, to my dismay, is that now, any moron can buy a TASER. I woke up early one morning and to my chagrin there was an infomercial on the air peddling fear and this new handheld compact torture device. I do have to admit that it looks nice and it even comes with a holster that someone might mistake for a cell phone holder.
The problem that I have with this is the same problem that I have with guns in general. Too many unqualified people own guns. Too many people in trying to defend themselves with guns often end up dead trying to protect themselves with them. Remember, the bad guy already has his drawn. Bring a TASER to a gunfight and the chances of you ending up in the morgue go up exponentially!
The company that is marketing the device at least has some sound advice. They say that after you TASE some poor fool, run to safety. Never mind your TASER, we will replace it for free with a police report. What is this country coming to? What’s next? AK47’s at the flea market? FDR said that “First of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. !” Just take the fear is fear itself part.
Anyway, my point is when is enough going to be enough? We’re Americans after all, we kick ass and take names! I don’t need a TASER or a gun to live my life. I live my life without fear. I believe in what Martin Luther King said shortly before he was assassinated, don’t quote me exactly but it was something to the effect that “Longevity has it’s place, but tonight I am not fearing any man…!” A TASER would not have reached James Earl Ray anyway.
Let’s stop being a nation of punks and buying into the fear perpetrated by Bush and his cronies over the last eight years. Live your life like an American who expects to live until a ripe old age. It really doesn’t matter what you do to try and prolong it because when it is time for your ticket to be punched, lights out!
Contrary to popular belief, I do not have a thing for Tasers! What I do have a thing for is the torture of human beings. Being shot with 50,000 volts of electricity is enough to fuck up your day. Just yesterday I learned that a naked man walking his dog at three in the morning was Tased here in Tallahassee a short time ago. Apparently, when questioned by police what he was doing, the man replied: “Allah told me to do it!” Or some shit like that! So right off the bat this dumbass is not crazy but a potential terrorist threat armed with Lassie and two plastic bags. To make a long story short he got his ass Tased and taken to the local hospital for a mental evaluation. Yesterday another naked man was Tased. Only this time, the outcome was different… Click the link to view video report.
NYPD Taser Death Sparks Outrage In Bed-Stuy
Naked And Deranged Man Shot Twice With Thousands Of Volts From Pistol-Shaped Weapon, Falls Off Fire Escape
BROOKLYN (CBS) ― Racquel McDonald was standing on Tomkins Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant, unknowingly recording the last moments of Iam Morales’ life on her cell phone.
Dozens of people witnessed it, too. Some were taking photos of Morales as he jumped up and down on top of a 10-foot high roll-down gate, swinging a florescent light bulb around and poking officers standing on a nearby fire escape.
An officer on the ground then raised his Taser gun and fired a 50,000-volt shock, immobilizing him.
“He wasn’t hurting anybody. They could have just grabbed him and bring him down but they Tasered him instead and he fell to his death and it was real wrong,” McDonald said.
Added a witness named “Kyle:” “The man was isolated for minute … and then he just fell to the floor. They had about eight cops that could’ve break the fall. They just moved back.”
Witnesses said police did nothing to break Morales’ fall, and his mother was standing just a few yards away. She was the one who called police, according to family friends, because 35-year-old Morales had a chemical imbalance and she believed he was suffering from a bad reaction to new medication.
“The mother was screaming, ‘He’s gonna fall!’ And they said, ‘Step back.’ They wouldn’t allow the mother to talk to him,” witness Charlene Gayle-Gordon said.
Added witness Kirk Giddings: “He was there cracking jokes, posing for the cops and everything. The man wasn’t a threat to nobody but himself.”
Morales later died at Kings County Hospital. Community Activists are now calling on the city to investigate.
“We’re not holding the whole NYC police department at fault, but we are questioning the actions of the supervisor of the Emergency Service Unit who took and who shot this young man, not one time but twice,” Sharonnie Perry said.
The community wants to know if the officers here followed proper protocol. Police said they are still investigating.
Thousands of New York City police sergeants began carrying Tasers on their belts this year.
The pistol-shaped weapons fire barbs up to 35 feet and deliver 50,000-volt shocks to immobilize people.
I received a link from a reader detailing the death of yet another man at the hands of the police. Kenneth Oliver was Tased at least four times by police early Friday morning in Miami. The article stated that Mr. Oliver was under the influence and knocking on doors screaming for help. The police were called and ordered Mr. Oliver to the ground and to put his hands behind his back. Not moving quickly enough, the police began Tasing Mr. Oliver. According to Mr. Oliver’s brother, Oliver had pins in his shoulders making it difficult to put his hands behind his back. I have provided the link at the end of this blog if you want to read the article and watch the video.
According to Amnesty International: “Tasers are powerful electro-shock weapons in use in more than 7,000 of the 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States. They are designed to incapacitate by conducting 50,000 volts of electricity into an individual’s body. The electrical pulses induce skeletal muscle spasms that immobilize and incapacitate the individual, causing them to fall to the ground.” So that means Mr. Oliver received 200,000 volts of electricity into his body. Shocking!
The latest statistics that I could find was a report released by Amnesty International on March 28, 2006. In 2005 there were a total of 61 Taser related deaths and since June of 2001 the total number of Taser related deaths stands at 152. The report also quotes Dr. William F. Schulz, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA as saying “Despite a lack of independent research on TASER safety, police officers are using these weapons as a routine force tool — rather than as a weapon of last resort.”
According to the same report: Most of those who died had pre-existing medical conditions, were under the influence of drugs or medication, and/or were subjected to multiple or prolonged electro-shocks. Among TASER-related deaths in the past year, for example, 40 were shocked more than three times and one person as many as 19 times. A majority of those who died went into cardiac or respiratory arrest at the scene. Whatever happened to a good old fashioned night stick ass whipping?
I am neither anti nor pro police! There must be some form of protection for the average citizen. However, I do not advocate the use of Tasers. Getting hit with 50,000 volts of electricity is a form of torture. If two or more police officers cannot subdue a man without killing him; just what the hell do they teach at the police academy?
